Dr. Kirk Haun has been around eye care virtually all his life. His father, Dr. Louis Haun, had his own practice in Maryville for years. Thanks to such early exposure, young Kirk went on to earn an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a medical degree from Vanderbilt, completed his residency at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital, and has since been practicing general Ophthalmology and LASIK vision correction for years. At Campbell Cunningham Laser Center, he attributes the combination of teamwork and technology with producing amazing results and improving patients’ quality of life.
“In our office, everyone is working for the same goal, which is to make our patients better, improving their vision, and helping to give them what they need,” he said. “Ophthalmology is a specialty that moves fairly rapidly in regard to technology. We’ve always worked hard to stay on the forefront those technologies. That includes our LASIK capabilities. Even with all my personal experience, it’s a benefit to me and my patients that we have such an amazing team here at Campbell Cunningham Laser Center.”
Following medical school, Dr. Haun completed the challenging process of becoming a Fellow of American College of Surgeons, a distinction that allows him access to surgeons across the nation in a variety of specialties. After completing his residency, Dr. Haun was asked to join his father Louis’ practice in Maryville. The elder Dr. Haun was suffering from cancer, had endured a heart attack, and was in great need of his son’s help.
“Those were busy days,” Dr. Haun recalls. “I had a wife and new baby and was helping Dad deal with new laws and regulations while covering for him when he was going through treatments and surgeries for his ailments. I was young, but sometimes that’s a great opportunity to learn early. It taught me that being a physician is more than just simply learning medicine and surgery. It’s also about being responsible and cognizant that I have employees, patients, and a family that rely on me to do things properly, ethically and the best that they can be done.”
The two Dr. Hauns operated the practice in Maryville together for four years. In 2000, they then merged with Campbell, Cunningham & Taylor to form the practice you know today as Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun.
“The merge couldn’t have gone better,” Dr. Haun says. “I knew all the surgeons and doctors with their practice and was very comfortable with them. With this team, we have an incredible amount of resources to give exceptional care to all our patients. In addition to treating many common eye conditions, I also perform quite a bit of LASIK procedures at the Campbell Cunningham Laser Center. I can’t describe how I feel when a patient returns with 20/20 vision and no longer requires glasses.”
Haun went on to say that, for some people, LASIK vision correction may be a source of some anxiety despite how common the procedure has become in recent years. If there are indeed any uncertainties, he takes pride in making his patients feel completely at ease.
“We can give them a sense of calm and a sense that we are more than capable of improving their vision through LASIK,” Haun said. “At least they know they’re in good hands.”
In his spare time, Dr. Haun enjoys fly fishing, boating, golfing, vacationing, and competing in triathlons. He also contributes his time and expertise to Remote Area Medical. Best of all is the time he spends with his wife and two children.
