LASIK® And Seasonal Allergies

LASIK® vision correction offers many benefits, and one is especially apparent this time of year—reduced irritation from seasonal allergies.

East Tennessee in the Springtime is beautiful—unless you suffer from allergies. Then it can be torture. Pollen from scores of different plants can trigger allergic reactions that lead to sneezing, itching, burning eyes, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

And if you suffer from allergies—you’re not alone. It’s estimated that between one quarter and one third of all Americans are affected by allergic conjunctivitis, or allergy-inflamed eyes. Even if you haven’t been allergic in the past, you could become sensitized and find that you’re suffering along with many others. If you suspect you are suffering from allergies, you can have a test performed with Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun. For more information, CLICK HERE.

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause a number of irritations: tearing, itching, burning, puffy eyelids and/or redness. Allergens can inflame the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid. With so many irritants in the air at this time of the year, it doesn’t take much to set off a firestorm of misery.

For wearers of contact lenses, allergic symptoms can be compounded. The lens can trap pollen, holding it against the conjunctiva and intensifying the reaction it can cause. Even glasses can trap pollen and other irritants if not cleaned regularly, causing reactions.

That’s where LASIK vision correction can offer relief. LASIK can reduce or eliminate the need for contact lenses or glasses, cutting out one potential source of irritation. This can make Springtime in Tennessee much more comfortable.

Also, eye irritants aren’t limited just to Spring—they can occur year round, with dust, pet dander, and hundreds of other sources. LASIK vision correction can pay off with more comfort year-round.

If you suffer from eye allergies, consult with your doctor for ideas on relief. There are over-the-counter remedies that can provide temporary relief, and prescriptions that can help more stubborn cases. And if you think you’d like to see how LASIK may help you, spend a couple of minutes completing our “Am I A Candidate?” questionnaire. Our staff will review your information and let you know if your answers show that you are a likely candidate for the LASIK procedure at the Campbell Cunningham Laser Center.
